Chapter Seventeen

Shortly after her first test with power, she was back at it again. She had been working to strengthen her speed and concentration. Her hits used less power when she was precise, so she could conserve her energy. She practiced at throwing up shields as well as hitting targets. Hitting the same target every time was her plan so she wouldn’t destroy any more of the landscape, but it was digging a large hole in the ground.

Training became more about control and keeping things small and fast so as not to make too loud a noise. Even though the next door neighbor was a few miles away, she didn’t want anyone to call the cops to investigate. Blade would no doubt be pissed she was out doing this during the daylight hours. He was very protective, and she liked that about him but she was compelled to get stronger as quickly as possible. The foretelling dream was coming. It loomed like a dark ominous cloud.

The sun was setting, but she continued. Her body was totally exhausted, but she kept practicing. A fight was headed their way, and she wanted to protect her new family with everything she had. She was now able to hit a target by just looking at it, then switch targets and hit the next one with only a brief glance, one after another in short secessions. She also found, she could direct the lightning to jump to the next target she picked out. As long as she touched the object with her gaze, the lightning hit it and was no longer random. The strike hit around eight to ten targets before it fizzled out.

After this last bout, she sat down hard on the lawn and laid back. The grass was cool and fresh smelling. She closed her eyes and rested for a moment, listening to the nocturnal birds and insects sing. The evening was quiet and so peaceful.

Blade appeared instantly beside her, making her jump with surprise.

“Blade!”

His anger was a living breathing thing, and he was gritting his teeth. No doubt he was trying to control the beast inside. “You are doing too much, and I don’t want you out here when I can’t protect you. You will wait for the sun to set next time. We clear?”

She smiled, unaffected by his angry orders, and turned to him. “How do you travel so fast? And I just wanted to lay here a moment and look at the golden clouds of sunset.”

He leaned over her. “Pretty little liar.”

Laughing, she touched his cheek. “You won’t let me have that one small half-truth?” She raised her brow and winked at him.

“You can’t hide your weariness from me, shayrell’mia. What if you were this weak during the daylight hours where I couldn’t protect you? You would be easy picking for anything that came along.” He took her chin and tilted her face so she met his gaze. “Promise me, you won’t be this foolish again. Give me your word.”

“You are right.
